Quick Answer

Ras Al Khaimah is about an hour from Dubai and combines Jebel Jais (the UAE’s highest mountain), quiet beaches, mangrove kayaking, desert camps and historic forts. One day covers the mountain or the coast; two days covers both.

Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE’s adventure emirate, where the Hajar Mountains meet the Arabian Gulf and you can zip line from the country’s highest peak in the morning and swim off a quiet beach in the afternoon. It is about an hour from Dubai and far less crowded.

This guide covers the best tourist spots, from Jebel Jais and the abandoned town of Al Jazirah Al Hamra to the beaches, mangroves and desert.

Why Visit Ras Al Khaimah

RAK offers genuine variety in a compact emirate: mountains, desert, mangroves, beaches and archaeology, without the crowds or prices of Dubai. It has become the UAE’s adventure-tourism centre.

The emirate is also strong on history, with settlements dating back thousands of years and one of the region’s most atmospheric abandoned towns.

Jebel Jais

1. Jebel Jais

The UAE’s highest mountain at around 1,934 metres is RAK’s headline attraction. The summit road is superb, and the mountain hosts the world’s longest zip line, the Jais Sledder, a free viewing deck park and the country’s highest restaurant.

Even without the adventure activities, the drive and the viewing terraces justify the trip. Temperatures run several degrees cooler than the coast.

2. Al Jazirah Al Hamra

An abandoned coastal pearling town of coral-block houses, courtyards and a mosque, left largely untouched since the 1960s. It is one of the last surviving traditional Gulf towns and genuinely atmospheric.

Visit in daylight and wear closed shoes — the ground is uneven and some structures are fragile.

Beaches & Coast
Quiet sand and calm Gulf water.

3. Beaches & the Corniche

RAK has some of the quietest beaches in the UAE, with soft sand and calm, shallow Gulf water. Public beaches sit alongside resort stretches, and the corniche is pleasant for an evening walk.

Water sports including kayaking, paddleboarding and jet skiing are available at the main beaches.

4. Mangroves & Kayaking

The RAK mangroves offer calm-water kayaking through channels lined with mangrove forest, home to herons, flamingos in season and other birdlife. Guided paddles run at sunrise and sunset.

It is an easy, family-friendly activity and a complete contrast to the mountains inland.

Getting There

Ras Al Khaimah city is roughly 100 to 115 km from Dubai, around an hour by road. Jebel Jais adds another 45 minutes of mountain driving from the base.

It works well as a long day trip, though the mountain and coastal attractions together really justify an overnight stay. See our day trips from Dubai for guided options.

Best Time & Tips
When to go and what to know.

Best Time to Visit & Tips

October to April is ideal across the emirate. The mountains stay cooler year-round, so summer visits are best focused on Jebel Jais and indoor attractions.

  • Allow a full day minimum, or stay overnight to cover both mountains and coast
  • Book Jebel Jais activities ahead — slots sell out at weekends
  • Bring layers for the mountain, even in warmer months
  • Wear closed shoes for Al Jazirah Al Hamra and Dhayah Fort
  • Time the mangroves for sunrise or sunset for birdlife and light
  • Weekdays are much quieter across all attractions

The Bottom Line

Ras Al Khaimah packs mountains, desert, mangroves, beaches and archaeology into an emirate an hour from Dubai, with a fraction of the crowds. Jebel Jais alone would justify the drive.

One day covers the mountain or the coast; two days covers both properly. Go between October and April and book the Jebel Jais activities before you travel.
